Do you know what to do if you are involved in a car accident?

Step 1

First and foremost, if you are not badly injured and you have managed to get yourself out of the vehicle, check your surroundings and make sure you are safe before then checking if your passengers or other drivers are safe.

Step 2

If possible, it is important to exchange necessary details and information with any other drivers involved, such as:

  •  Full name
  • Address
  • Vehicle details (including registration, make, model – take a photo if you can)
  • Take a photo of their drivers licence
  • Contact details
  • Insurance details
  • Time and location of the accident (again take photos where possible)

Step 3

If anybody is injured, the police and ambulance (where necessary) should be phoned. Ensure drivers and witnesses give a recount to the police about what has happened and, if you can, obtain the police report number in case you need it for future reference.

Step 4

Importantly, seek medical advice and treatment when needed. If you require ongoing rehabilitation such as physiotherapy or even counselling, we can assist you with funding for that rehabilitation so that you are not out of pocket for these ongoing expenses.

In Queensland, we are fortunate to benefit from a Compulsory Third Party insurance scheme whereby if people are injured on our roads, through no fault of their own, they may be eligible to claim compensation against the at fault driver.

If you have any questions about CTP insurance, our friendly team would be happy to assist. Take a look at our previous article which provides more in depth details about CTP insurance and claims.
